Q: What is Exam4?
A: Exam4 is a secure word-processing application that enables students to take type their in-class exams, while locking them out of other applications and documents on and documents on their laptops, and allows them to submit the exam electronically. The encrypted exam file is downloaded and printed by Student Affairs and given to the professor to grade.
Q: Does Exam4 have spell check?
A: Yes. Spell check must be selected from the Tools menu. We recommend students allocate 5-10 minutes at the end of their exam time to spell check.
Q: How do I sign up to type my exams on a laptop computer?
A: All law students will automatically be registered for Extegrity’s Exam4 software for the current semester. All you have to do is confirm that your laptop is compatible with the software, download the most recent version of the software, and learn how to operate and become familiar with the software.
Q: When can I download Exam4?
A: For every semester, there are early/midterm and final exams versions of Exam4; both are available for download at least one week before the first scheduled exam and students are notified by e-mail.
Q: Who can use Exam4?
A: Exam4 is now available to all students in all classes, unless the exam is a floating exam, a take-home exam, a multiple-choice-only exam, or an exam in which the professor requires that the answers be written directly on the examination itself. Exam4 may be used for the essay portion of combined multiple-choice and essay exams.
Q: Will it cost me anything to use Exam4?
A: There is a $30 annual registration fee for using Exam4, which covers the entire academic year (fall, spring, and summer). Since students will automatically be registered each semester with the choice to opt out, if a student opts out of Extegrity in Fall, but decides to use it in the Spring and/or Summer the fee is still $30. It is not prorated based on the semesters in which it is used.
Q: If I have problems with the software or last-minute questions before my exam, who can I contact?
A: For problems with the download or operation of the software, you should contact Extegrity’s User Support. If you have UT-specific questions about the format or general exam procedures, contact Student Affairs.

Q: Where are Exam4 exams held?
A: Check your exam schedule for the room number. Students typing and writing exams will be in the same room. (As a courtesy, the Student Affairs Office provides earplugs free of charge.) Make sure you arrive at least 30 minutes early for your exam, so that you have time to set up your laptop computer and ask last-minute questions before the exam starts.
Q: What do I need to bring to my Exam4 exam?
A: You must bring a laptop computer equipped with the most recent version of the Exam4 software applicable to the laptop’s operating system, an 802.11b or 802.11g-compatible wireless Ethernet adapter (also called Wi-Fi compliant), a power cord and/or batteries, AND an extension cord.
Q: What if my laptop computer crashes or freezes during an exam?
A: Any problems that occur during the exam are the student’s responsibility. Most problems are solved when the proctor or exam administrator restarts your laptop computer. If that does not work, you will need to hand-write the rest of your exam. A backup copy of the typed portion of the exam will be retrieved from the laptop computer’s hard drive after the exam is concluded. No exam relief, including additional time, will be granted for malfunctioning equipment, such as software problems or loss of power.
Q: Will Exam4 prevent me from using an external (USB) keyboard and mouse?
A: Exam4 locks you out of all other applications and documents on your computer, but fully supports your peripherals, including external keyboards and mice.
Q: Can I use a friend’s computer to type my Exam4 exams? In other words, can students, who do not have the same courses, use the same computer and software for final exams?

Q: What if I would like to write my exams rather than type?
A: A student may opt out of typing in-class exams by registering to do so. Please be aware if you register to write your exams, you will not be allowed to use Exam4 and must write ALL of your exams. If you DO NOT wish to type your in-class exams, it is your responsibility to opt out by the deadline.
Q: What do I need to do if I opted out of typing my exams and want to have the $30 fee reversed?
A: If you registered to write your exams by the appropriate deadline, the $30 fee will be reversed within 48 business hours of registering. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that fees were removed.
